Many of the casinos in Atlantic City voluntarily shut down in early March, leading to a surge in unemployment and food insecurity. The emergency food distribution was paid for by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), who approved an additional $300,000 in funding support for in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
